The Bundala National Park lies on the southern coast stretching across nearly 20km along a coastal strip between Kirinda and Hambantota in the Southern Province, about 274km away from Colombo. Just like any destination, Bundala too has its seasons with September to March being the best months to explore. Bundala was first named as a wildlife sanctuary on 5th December 1969. Having been acclaimed for its rich diversity of bird and plant species in 2005, Bundala was nominated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO, the fourth biosphere reserve in Sri Lanka. The park has attracted many tourists locally and internationally.
Bundala National Park is a fantastic maze of waterways, lagoons and dunes that glitter like gold in the dying evening sun. This wonderland provides a home to thousands of colourful birds ranging from diminutive little bee-eaters to grotesque open-billed stalks. Many big mammals are also present, with between 15 and 60 elephants depending on the season .The park shelters almost 200 species of birds within its 62-sq-km area, with many journeying from Siberia and the Rann of Kutch in India to winter here, arriving between August and April Bundala also has civets, giant squirrels and lots of crocodiles.
